ONE BIG FAMILY
The oldest is 17, the twins are just 3. With five children, it's a busy and cozy atmosphere in the Garcia Barros household. Exactly what Elvira and Adilson (both 42) always dreamed of. However, it's not all sunshine and roses.

'We wanted a warm, big nest ourselves too'
Elvira: “Adilson and I both grew up with foster brothers and sisters. We wanted that kind of warm nest for ourselves. In addition to four biological children, we have four foster children. The oldest three now live on their own. There is always laughter in our house, and if one brother is sad, his sister cheers him up. That's how it used to be with us. I had a special bond with my little brother Brian. He worked as a nurse at St. Antonius Hospital in Utrecht and was featured on the cover of this magazine in 2020 as a hero in healthcare. I was so proud of him! I was seven when Brian came to live with us, and he was three. Although we had a happy childhood, his early years left a deep mark on him. Brian struggled with separation anxiety, which could make him depressed. He lived life to the fullest, but he also struggled with this. That contrast became greater as he got older. In April, he chose to end his life. I miss him every day. The fact that we are featured in this magazine four years after Brian is our way of honoring him."
